News from Suzie, by Katherine

Suzie

“We got Suzie from the ACS last October along with her daughter, Esme. We were told when we first went to visit the cats that Suzy and her two sons were FeLV positive but that Esme was negative. We went home and did some research about what caring for her would entail. We had only intended to take home one cat but, of course, when we decided we could take Suzie on we had to bring Esme home as well.

The Ryan Brothers, Alex and Eliot, are Suzie's sons and are also FeLV positive. Unless they find a very special home, like their mum, they will remain at the sanctuary in the care of Anne P.

Having one FeLV positive and one negative cat has been a bit of a challenge because the virus can be passed by saliva from feed bowls and the cats grooming each other, as well as through shared litter trays, so we have had to take care to feed the cats separately and to maintain high levels of hygiene where it comes to items they share (like toys and litter trays). Esme also needs more frequent vaccination than cats who are not as likely to be exposed to the virus.

I had Suzie re-tested a few weeks ago on the advice of our vet because I was concerned that she might be unwell. I was surprised and happy when the test came back negative. Some cats clear it from their system, and while I always hoped that this would happen I didn’t expect it.

Suzie is a lovely cat, she is so affectionate, she will be curling up on top of any visitor and trying to scent mark them within seconds of meeting them. At the ACS rescue centre she came straight up to me and sat in my arms, looking into my face as if to say ‘well, what now? Are we going home or not?’. She is always sitting with me, on my lap if there’s room or beside me if there isn’t, and when I’m working at the table she will sit on the table next to me.

She is certainly made to be a lady of luxury because she doesn’t have much desire to chase about (although she will often chase Esme when she wants to play with her mum), she hardly miows at all, and seems to have no desire for anything outside the apartment. However, she is far from being apathetic about life. Her favourite thing is watching the birds out of the window, and even on the television if there is a nature documentary she can sit in front of, and, of course, she has a mad five minutes every now and then, where she gets excited by a trailing cord or squeaky toy.

We are waiting for the results of her full blood test to confirm that she has cleared the leukaemia. We have only had her and Esme for a year but I would be lost without either of them, so I am keeping all my fingers crossed that it confirms the good news.”

Unfortunately, the results of the full blood test came back positive.  However, Suzie is still living a happy life in the care of Katherine.

Wendy’s Wish Book

I have a favour to ask you.  Another one you may say!  This one won’t cost you anything else other than a little bit of your time.

Wendy, one of our supporters, came up with a lovely idea.  She would like you to send her your wish for 2012 as she is trying to put together a wish book.  Nobody other than her will read your wish.  For every wish she receives, Wendy will be donating 1 euro to an animal welfare charity.

“I’m putting together a ‘Wish Book’ for 2012 where I’m hoping to get people’s wishes from all over the world. I’m asking people to write down their wish on a sheet of paper. You can be as creative as you like and the wish can be 1 line or 20 pages, it’s upto you. I’m just asking for people to write down their wish, what it means to them and what it would mean to them if it came true. Nobody will read it only me so no need to worry. For each wish I get, 1 Euro will be donated to charity (animal of course).”

Now, the difficulty is to pick only one wish!  Happy wishing!

You can email Wendy at carolinessister1981@gmail.com for more details.

ACS Christmas Party 2011

This Sunday, the ACS will hold its Christmas party at the Clarion hotel.  It promises to be a night of fun and entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere and the perfect occasion to meet our supporters.

The evening will begin at 6pm with some chilled out music by Austin Hallahan playing the keyboard to accompany our pre-dinner drinks.

At 7pm, we will move to a room overlooking the river where we will enjoy a three-course meal with tea/coffee.  Note that a gorgeous vegetarian option is included in the menu!

Following our meal, we will have a small vintage auction with some items dating from the 70′s and even early 20th century.  Amongst other, this gorgeous clock will be auctioned, as well as this authentic lighter/cigarette box.  There will also be some vintage jewellery and other accessories for auction.  It might be the occasion to find that rare Christmas present you were looking for.

Then, Katie McGroarty will play a set.  If you haven’t seen Katie yet, you are missing on something.

Next, we will proceed to the draw of our Christmas Appeal Raffle.  There are fantastic prizes to be won (have a look here).  Some tickets will be on sale during the night or you can arrange to buy them by contacting emilie@animalcaresociety.ie.

Finally, we will close the night with some more live music.

There will also be another draw during the night as all party tickets will be put into a hat when you arrive.  There will be a few great surprise prizes to win!

Tickets are €42, of which 25% will go directly towards our vet and food bills for the animals in our care.  They can be bought online or by emailing emilie@animalcaresociety.ie.  Note that we need to confirm numbers in the next couple of days and that tickets need to be purchased prior to the event.

And the winner is…

We are delighted to announce the winner of our November photo competition.
Cormac Walsh, with his photo “Lose yourself in my eyes”, wins a fantastic Christmas hamper.  Congratulations Cormac!

Lose Yourself in My Eyes by Cormac Walsh

Thank you to all the participants who shared their wonderful photos with us, but most importantly helped the animals in our care by doing so.  We’d also like to thank the public on Facebook, as well as our jury, who had the difficult task to choose only one out of the five beautiful pictures shortlisted.  Finally, thank you to Liz McGroarty for making this lovely hamper.

Well done to all!

The December Competition is now on, so grab your camera!

FOUND, Cobh, 9/12/11

This young kitten was found in Cobh this morning in the engine of a car where he probably spent the night.  He is probably about 4 or 5 weeks old.

FOUND, Macroom, 6/12/11

This black and white female kitten was found on the 6th of December outside Dunnes Stores in Macroom where she was crying and not moving.  We believe that she may have travelled with a delivery truck.  She is friendly, healthy and has been well looked after ( she is quite fat).  Her markings are quite distinctive, so you might recognise her.  If so, ring 0894578655
